Closing it out right

HUNTSVILLE — Scott was able to improve to fourth place in District 4-2A, and played a role in shuffling the top of the district standings with a pair of wins to close out the regular season.

The Highlanders earned wins on back-to-back nights last week, first defeating Anderson County 58-54 at Highlander Gymnasium on Thursday, and defeating Christian Academy of Knoxville 64-55 on the same floor the following evening.

Jordan Massengale — who was honored for his school-record 11 3-point shots in a game against Sunbright earlier in the week — connected on six treys Friday, scoring a game-high 20 points to help lead the Highlanders past CAK.

Three of Massengale’s long-range jumpers came in a critical third quarter that saw Scott outscore the Warriors 24-14 to turn a 30-24 halftime deficit into a four-point lead heading into the final period.

Jacob Sexton scored 18 points, while Nathan Griffith added seven, Jordan Boshears seven, Bradly Brooks six and DJ Jones five for the Highlanders.

CAK was led by Emery Naler’s 19 points. Anderson Payne added 12 and Colby Maddox 10.

Jones grabbed 10 rebounds in addition to his five points. Sexton grabbed seven boards and recorded three steals. Griffith also had three steals.

An evening earlier, Sexton scored 23 points and Boshears added 12 as the Highlanders surprised district-leading Anderson County.

Scott jumped to an 18-12 lead in the first quarter and led 29-28 at the intermission before taking a two-point lead to the final period.

Jordan Rorex led the Mavericks with 22 points. Tyler Cross added 13.

Sexton grabbed five rebounds and five steals in addition to his 23 points.

Brackets for the District 4-2A Tournament had not been completed as of Tuesday morning. The tournament begins tonight (Thursday) and will be played at Knox Catholic.
