FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2006

HUNTSVILLE — Josh Terry scored a touchdown with 1:27 remaining tonight to cap an evening of explosive offense and lift Scott High to a 46-40 win over Oliver Springs.

The Highlanders (2-1) and the Bobcats (0-2) battled back and forth for much of the game, trading touchdowns during the third and fourth quarters before the Highlanders’ defense stopped the Bobcats’ last-minute effort to answer Terry’s touchdown.

Scott exploded for three consecutive touchdowns and a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, only to see Oliver Springs roar back with three touchdowns of its own in the second quarter to take a 21-20 lead late in the first half. The Highlanders would go on to lead at the intermission, 26-20.

Josh Terry had a career night for the Highlanders, rushing for 145 yards and four touchdowns on 34 carries, and completing 12 of 21 passes for 218 yards and two more touchdowns.

Sophomore newcomer Josey Chambers also had a huge game for Scott, scoring all three of the Highlanders’ first quarter touchdowns, including a pair of 31-yard touchdown receptions and a three-yard touchdown run. Chambers finished with five catches for 123 yards.

Oliver Springs had three runningbacks finish with 100 yards on the ground, meanwhile. Lynn Haynes led the effort with 135 yards and three touchdowns, while Cody West added 112 yards and Garrett Bishop tacked on 101 yards and two scores.

The Highlanders took first possession in the game, and appeared to be stopped by Oliver Springs on a three-and-out. Jared Sexton’s punt was coughed up by Bishop, however, and recovered by Tyler Blizzard to give the Highlanders new life at midfield.

Scott would go on to score on three consecutive possessions, the first of which came three plays later on a 31-yard pass from Terry to Chambers, giving the Highlanders a 6-0 lead after the two-point conversion attempt failed.

After a three-and-out by Oliver Springs, Scott took possession at the Bobcats’ 37-yard-line and scored five plays later when Chambers carried the ball in from three yards out, giving the Highlanders a 14-0 lead after Terry hooked up with Josh Jeffers on the two-point conversion pass.

Two plays later, Jacob Buttram recovered a fumble by quarterback CJ Pointer at the Bobcats’ 31-yard-line, and Scott needed just one play to score again, with Terry and Chambers connecting for another 31-yard touchdown, giving Scott a 20-0 lead with 2:37 remaining in the opening period.

The Bobcats would quickly rip the momentum away from Scott, however, and score three touchdowns of their own to steal the lead in the second quarter.

The first came on a nine-yard run by Haynes with 11:14 remaining in the half, cutting the deficit to 20-8 after Pointer scored on the two-point conversion.

After a three-and-out by the Highlanders, Oliver Springs would put together a 54-yard drive that was capped by a 30-yard touchdown run by Bishop, cutting the deficit to 20-14.

Another three-and-out later, Oliver Springs scored again, this time on a 47-yard run by Haynes with 4:15 remaining. Jake Johnson’s point after kick gave the Bobcats a 21-20 lead.

Scott would respond by recapturing the lead before the intermission, however, with Terry engineering a six-play, 80-yard drive in just 2:08. The touchdown came on an 18-yard run by Terry with 2:07 remaining before the end of the half.

The Bobcats would have one final opportunity to score in the first half, driving to the Highlanders’ five-yard-line in five plays. But Johnson’s 22-yard field goal attempt sailed wide, allowing the Highlanders to take a six-point lead to the halftime break.

After an exchange of punts to begin the third quarter, Oliver Springs took possession at the Highlanders’ 15-yard-line and needed just one play for Haynes to give his team the lead back with a touchdown run of 15 yards.

The Highlanders would respond with a touchdown drive of their own, covering 54 yards in eight plays, with Terry scoring from one yard out with 2:09 remaining in the third quarter. Terry carried the ball in on the two-point conversion, giving Scott a 34-27 lead.

After another exchange of punts, Oliver Springs took over at the Highlanders’ 21-yard-line and scored three plays later on a one-yard run by Bishop, tying the game at 34-34 with 10:01 remaining in the game.

The Highlanders again responded with a touchdown drive of their own, covering 80 yards in nine plays, with Terry scoring from two-yards out with 5:40 remaining. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the Highlanders with a 40-34 lead.

Three plays later, Bishop broke free for a 52-yard touchdown, giving Oliver Springs an opportunity to recapture the lead. But the extra point attempt was blocked by Buttram, leaving the game tied at 40-40 with 4:24 remaining.

As with the Bobcats’ previous two touchdowns, Scott responded with a long touchdown drive, marching 76 yards in eight plays to regain the lead. A key play was a 12-yard, fourth-down pass from Terry to Bryan Golden, setting up the Highlanders with a first-and-goal after a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty was tacked on against Oliver Springs.

On the next play, Terry carried the ball in from eight yards out, putting Scott up 46-40 with 1:27 remaining.

Oliver Springs took the ensuing kickoff and marched into Scott High territory before its final opportunity to win the game stalled at the 38-yard-line. Four consecutive incomplete passes by the Bobcats forced the ball over on downs. With only 27 seconds remaining, the Highlanders were able to run out the remaining clock to claim their second consecutive victory.
