Top-ranked Falcons soar to 56-0 win
HUNTSVILLE — The state’s top-ranked Class 3A team came to Highlander Field here Friday night, scored 48 first-half points, and left with a 56-0 win over the Highlanders.
Fulton, which has not been seriously challenged this season except for a powerful Alcoa team that sets atop the Class 2A rankings, featured a defense that was as impressive as its highly-touted offense, as the Falcons limited the Highlanders’ capable offense to 108 yards and pitched a shut-out, Scott’s first shut-out loss since a 21-0 loss at Anderson County last October.
Fulton was led by standout tailback Dennis Rogan, who recorded 115 yards on eight carries. Terrence Cobb added 63 yards on four carries for the Falcons. Quarterback Jock Stinson completed three of four passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns.
The Falcons blew the game open in the first quarter, scoring 28 opening period points. Fulton scored on each of its seven first-half possessions.
The Highlanders started the game with possession at their 20-yard-line. An 18-yard run by Josh Jeffers, who led the Highlanders with 51 yards on 17 carries, immediately pushed the ball to midfield for Scott. But the Highlanders could advance the ball no further, and punted the ball over to Fulton three plays later.
The Falcons wasted little time getting on the board, as Rogan broke free for a 65-yard touchdown gallop to put Fulton up 6-0.
Two plays later, Fulton had the ball back after Rogan recovered a fumble following a completed pass from Josh Terry to Josey Chambers. Two plays after that, Stinson completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jamichael Mathis, putting the Falcons up 14-0.
The ensuing possession ended in a three-and-out for the Highlanders, giving Fulton possession at the Highlanders’ 19-yard-line after a punt netted just four yards.
One play later, Rogan was in the endzone again, and Fulton had scored three times on four offensive plays, and led 20-0.
Another three-and-out gave Fulton possession at midfield. This time, it took the Falcons just three plays to add to their lead, as Mathis scored from 53 yards away, putting Fulton up 28-0 with 1:15 remaining in the opening period.
After an interception by Maurice Stinson, Fulton put another score on the board, covering 24 yards in four plays. Rogan capped the drive from seven yards out, putting his team up 34-0 with 11:10 remaining in the half.
Another three-and-out on the Highlanders’ ensuing possession allowed Fulton to take possession at Scott’s 35-yard-line. Three plays later, Stinson hooked up with Derrick Humphrey for a 23-yard touchdown pass, putting the Falcons on top 42-0.
Yet another three-and-out for the Highlanders resulted in another Jared Sexton punt. The punt was fumbled by Fulton, giving Scott possession at midfield. But again the Falcons would not allow a first down, and Sexton’s next punt was blocked, giving Fulton possession at the Highlanders’ 25-yard-line. Two plays later, Bubba Stokes carried the ball in from 16 yards out to give Fulton a 48-0 lead with a minute remaining before the intermission.
Fulton would score once more in the second half, a 49-yard run by Terrence Cobb with 8:04 remaining in the third quarter.
Scott was able to put together one scoring opportunity in the second half. On their final drive, the Highlanders drove 25 yards to the Fulton 10-yard-line. A second-down pass from Terry was caught by Sexton in the endzone, but Sexton was ruled out-of-bounds on the play.
