Green Wave rolls over Indians
Quarterback Seth Lyle rushed for 125 yards and added 133 return yards, and Midway’s defense pitched a shut-out against Oneida, as the Green Wave spoiled homecoming at Dr. M.E. Thompson Field with a 25-0 win over the Indians.
Midway (4-2, 2-1) jumped to an 18-0 lead 14 minutes into the game and turned back several Oneida touchdown opportunities to preserve the win and stay in the hunt for a region championship. The Green Wave are one game back of Coalfield in conference standings.
Friday’s matchup was supposed to be a low-scoring defensive affair between two of Region 2-A’s best defenses, but senior Lyle stole the show, scoring two touchdowns and sparking the Green Wave with sheer speed and agility, as Midway won its fourth consecutive game over the Indians.
The loss, meanwhile, dropped Oneida to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in region play.
The Indians had scoring opportunities, including two trips inside the “red zone,” one of which ended with a turnover in the second quarter and the other with a turnover on downs in the fourth quarter.
Adam Jeffers led the Indians’ offense with 111 yards rushing on 16 carries. Jonathan Lewallen added 47 yards on 11 carries.
As a team, Oneida rushed for 169 yards, but completed only two of 11 passes for nine yards.
Midway was led by Lyle, with 125 yards on 13 carries. Tailback Ray Robinson added 94 yards on 18 carries. The Green Wave rushed for 262 yards and completed two passes for 16 yards.
The Green Wave picked up a pair of first downs on the game’s first possession, before the drive stalled. A Lyle punt backed the Indians up to their 15-yard-line. Behind running by Jeffers, Oneida pushed the ball to its 42-yard-line before the drive stalled. A Zach Lambert punt gave Midway possession at its 38-yard-line. Two plays later, Lyle broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run, putting the Green Wave up 6-0 after Sam Hughett turned back a two-point conversion attempt by Midway.
Oneida would find itself in Midway territory moments later, following a 15-yard run by Lewallen. But on third-and-three, Midway’s defense stopped Oneida short and forced a punt attempt, which was blocked, giving the Green Wave good field position at Oneida’s 40-yard-line.
Four plays later, Harley Davidson carried the ball in from 23 yards out, putting the Green Wave up 12-0 with 51 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Hughett again stopped the Green Wave’s conversion attempt, falling on a fumble.
After Lambert returned the ensuing kickoff to near midfield, Midway’s defense forced a three-and-out. Again, the Green Wave turned in a big special teams play, as Lyle returned Lambert’s punt 80 yards for a touchdown, putting his team up 18-0 with 10:18 remaining in the opening half.
Down three scores, Oneida’s offense was finally able to put together a scoring threat, behind running by Jeffers and Lewallen. But after a three-yard run by Lewallen gave Oneida a first down at Midway’s 12-yard-line, a center-quarterback exchange was fumbled, with Lyle recovering for Midway.
A three-and-out by the Green Wave gave Oneida possession at Midway’s 40-yard-line, and again the Indians drove inside the Green Wave 30-yard-line. But the drive stalled, and on fourth down, a pass completion from Torrey Slaven to Jeffers was stopped five yards short of the first down.
Oneida took first possession in the third quarter, but after an 11-yard run by Slaven gave Oneida a first down at midfield, a personal foul penalty backed the Indians up to their own 33-yard-line. Two plays later, a Slaven pass was intercepted by Midway at the Green Wave 39-yard-line.
Midway would then march inside Oneida’s 20 before the Indians’ defense held its ground, forcing the ball over on downs at the 11-yard-line with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter.
But Oneida’s offense was unable to pick up a first down, and two plays after an Oneida punt, Eric Stansberry carried the ball in from two yards out to put Midway up 25-0 with 11:27 remaining in the game.
After an exchange of punts, Oneida put together its best drive of the evening, marching inside Midway’s 10-yard-line on three consecutive carries of more than 10 yards by Jeffers. But after picking up a first-and-goal on the eight-yard-line, the drive stalled. A second down pass into the endzone by Slaven into the endzone was dropped, and a fourth down pass fell incomplete, as the Indians turned the ball over on downs at Midway’s three-yard-line.
