Pioneer man indicted on child rape charges

HUNTSVILLE — A Pioneer man arrested earlier this year and accused of sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl was indicted last week by a Scott County grand jury.

Anthony Ray Scogin, 26, of Charlie Byrd Lane in Pioneer, was indicted on three counts each of rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery and incest.

The indictment was one of 11 returned last week by the grand jury.

The alleged incidents occurred in December, according to the indictment.

Scogin allegedly told investigators in February that his behavior was the result of “lack of being with a woman,” and that he “tried to have sex with the victim . . . [but] the victim would complain that it hurt.” According to an arrest warrant filed by Det. Ricky Lee Jeffers of the Sheriff’s Department, Scogin told investigators that he “realized after every incident that what I was doing was wrong, but found it hard to stop myself.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Department of Children’s Services assisted with the investigation.

In a separate indictment, an Oneida man was charged with multiple crimes after allegedly holding his estranged wife against her will.

Teddy Russell Robbins, 39, of Oneida, was charged with aggravated rape, especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault and domestic assault for an alleged attack on his wife at her Helenwood home in February.

An arrest warrant filed by the Sheriff’s Department at the time alleged that Robbins held his wife for several hours before she managed to use a telephone to alert authorities.

Among other indictments returned by the grand jury:

• Ashley L. Gray, 32, was indicted on three counts of aggravated statutory rape for allegedly having a sexual relationship in October 2008 with a minor more than 10 years younger than herself;

• Amanda K. Garrett, 27, was named in separate indictments for theft over $1,000, three counts of forgery and failure to appear. The indictments allege that Garrett stole tools and guns valued at more than $1,000 in January, and forged checks obtained from the same victims at area businesses;

• Juan Reyes Gonzales, 23, was indicted on charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and failure to appear, all stemming from a Christmas Eve incident in which Gonzalees allegedly assaulted an Oneida woman inside her residence with the use of a knife;

• Steven Clark Friend, 55, was indicted on four counts of child neglect and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, stemming from an alleged January incident;

• Bobby Denton Ross, 19, was indicted on charges of vandalism over $1,000 and desecration of a venerated object, stemming from a September 2008 incident in which Ross allegedly damaged a crypt at Carson Memorial Park & Mausoleum; and,

• Daniel Sylvester Brewster, 29, and Eugenia Diane Hamilton, 29, were indicted on charges of illegal possession of drugs and paraphernalia, stemming from a December incident in which they were allegedly discovered in possession with more than one-half ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

An indictment is a document presented to the grand jury by prosecutors, and does not represent a criminal conviction. The grand jury returns a true bill if it determines that sufficient evidence exists to send the matter to trial, and a no true bill if it determinees that such evidence does not exist. There is a possibility that some persons in the community may have names similar to those indicted.
