Fire damages Cherry Fork residence

HELENWOOD — A late morning fire drew a large response from area fire departments in the Cherry Fork community Wednesday.

Mid-County Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a residence at the intersection of Cherry Fork Road and Sulpher Creek Road shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Mutual aid assistance was requested from Oneida Fire Department and Huntsville Fire Department as well.

When the first firefighters arrived at the residence, owned by John and Michelle Norris, flames were visible from the second story.

A number of firefighters and a total of 12 fire engines from the three departments responded to the fire, and were able to contain the fire to the upper level of the residence. However, the home suffered significant damage.

Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Gary A. Sexton and Deputy Karen Woodard also responded to the scene of the fire, along with Scott County EMS.

The fire marked the second in a four-day span requiring the joint efforts of the three departments. On Feb. 15, a 72-year-old Helenwood woman died in a residential fire on Galloway Drive.
