One injured in Winfield wreck

WINFIELD — A 17-year-old student was injured in a single-vehicle accident on Pleasant Grove Road Tuesday morning.

According to investigating officer Brian King of the Winfield Police Department, the driver of the vehicle, a 1997 Chevy Camaro, was Christian N. Byrd, 17, of Winfield.

Byrd, a student at Oneida High School, was apparently on her way to class when she lost control of her vehicle while westbound on Pleasant Grove Road and left the roadway, first striking a wooden fence before hitting a utility pole and overturning. She was ejected from the vehicle, but her injuries were said to be non-life threatening.

Byrd was transported by EMS to St. Mary’s of Scott County Emergency Room, and was later transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Attempts to airlift her from the hospital failed, as Lifestar was unable to fly to Oneida due to high winds.

Pleasant Grove remained closed for approximately 90 minutes after the 8 a.m. accident, as the wreckage was cleared and crews from Plateau Electric Cooperative set a new pole.

Deputies from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department and Winfield Fire Department assisted Winfield Police Department and EMS at the scene of the accident.
