Shooting investigation leads to meth discovery
What began as an attempt to take a suspect into arrest after a shooting incident in the Winfield area resulted in the discovery of several components of a methamphetamine lab, an arrest warrant filed by the Scott County Sheriff’s Department alleges.
Chris Jenkins, of Oneida, faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine stemming from the alleged incidents.
According to the warrant, filed by K-9 Officer Kris Lewallen, officers executed a search warrant at a Summit Drive residence in Oneida, and took Jenkins into arrest on two counts of aggravated assault, stemming from an alleged incident earlier in the day in which Jenkins had allegedly fired a gun at an individual in the Winfield area.
During the course of searching the residence for the weapon used in the shooting incident, K-9 Officer Danny Phillips allegedly opened a cabinet and discovered several precursors used to manufacture meth. The warrant states that a separate search warrant was then obtained to search for additional meth components.
Allegedly recovered from the residence were five small propane tanks, denatured alcohol, acetone, Epson salt, a funnel, measuring cups, coffee filters, rubbing alcohol, a glass “crack pipe”, thousands of small plastic bags, a metal spoon, psuedophedrine tablets, large boxes of matches, three grams of suspected meth ice, suspected Xanax pills, needles, tubing, a box of rubber gloves and a gallon of distilled water.
The search which began earlier in the afternoon, concluded at 6:15 p.m. Thursday evening. Jenkins was charged with promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (meth ice) for resale, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance (Xanax) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Assisting the drug officers at the scene were Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Wes Byrge and Deputies Adam Douglas and Marvin Buttram. Grant Lowe, of the Tennessee Methamphetamine Task Force, joined investigators at the scene.
“This is the third meth bust in two weeks (in Scott County),” Sheriff Anthony Lay said. “We see meth making a small rise again in Scott County, as we see it making a large rise in surrounding counties.
“The Scott County Sheriff’s Department will attack meth users and makers with full manpower efforts to keep people who are using meth and making meth out of our county,” he added. “We will use all intelligence we can gather and check on every lead we get to ensure meth users and meth makers are put in jail.”
