Early voting enters final days

HUNTSVILLE — Voters wishing to cast their ballots early for the Aug. 7 general election have just three days left in which to do so, according to Scott County Administrator of Elections Gabe Lowe.

Polls will be open at the Oneida Municipal Services Building and the Scott County Office Building in Huntsville today (Thursday) from noon until 3 p.m., tomorrow from noon until 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.

After the first week of balloting in the early voting period, nearly 550 voters had cast their ballots, according to Lowe.

Persons intending to vote at the early voting locations must show proof of identification, such as a valid driver’s license or their voter registration card.

The election will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7.

Only one county-wide race is on the ballot. Tax assessor Steve Thompson is seeking re-election and is being opposed by Rick Russ. Also up for grabs are school board seats in the 2nd and 3rd Districts. Vivian Smith is unopposed in her re-election for the 6th District school board seat. Dr. Nancy Williamson and Dr. Danny Cross are seeking re-election to the Oneida Special School District Board of Education, and constable positions are up for election in each of the county’s seven districts.

Primaries in state elections will also be held. The state senate, state representative, U.S. Representative and U.S. Senate seats are all up for re-election. Of those, all incumbents are seeking re-election with the exception of State Sen. Tommy Kilby. Roane County Republican Ken Yager and Morgan County Democrat Becky Ruppe will vie for that seat, but each will run unopposed in their party’s respective primary next week.
