Former deputy charged in alleged DUI incident
A former law enforcement officer faces multiple charges following a weekend pursuit by officers in the Town of Oneida.
According to an arrest warrant filed Monday, Kevin L. Carson, age 34, of Helenwood, was charged following a pursuit by Oneida Police Department Patrolman Gerry “Greasey” Garrett. Carson is a former deputy at the Scott County Sheriff’s Department.
Allegedly, Officer Garrett observed Carson’s Mitsubishi Eclipse speeding on U.S. Hwy. 27 in south Oneida near Garrett Private Lane, just north of the Norfolk-Southern railroad overpass. As Garrett attempted to catch up with the vehicle, the warrant stated, he observed the vehicle “collide with a white vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign” as it attempted to turn onto Niggs Creek Road at the Scott County Food Court.
The warrant stated that the vehicle fled from the scene of the accident and turned onto Helenwood Detour Road, with Garrett in pursuit after activating his cruiser’s blue lights and siren.
Allegedly, Carson stopped his vehicle a short distance later, and Garrett noticed “in plain view an open container of beer in the console.”
Allegedly, Carson told Garrett that he had consumed “six or eight beers.”
While attempting to take Carson into arrest, the warrant stated, Carson allegedly attempted several times to resist arrest and return to his vehicle, and allegedly attempted to pour out the open container of beer.
Carson was booked at the Oneida Police Department, where he was charged with DUI, reckless driving,
speeding 67 MPH in a 45 MPH zone, evading arrest, hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, violation of the open container law, resisting arrest, two counts of reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence, improper passing, vandalism over $500, and refusing to sign his citation.
He was housed at the Scott County Jail, and was arraigned in General Sessions Court Monday morning.
