Report: Crime down slightly in Scott County

The crime rate in Scott County last year was very similar to the crime rate in 2006, a report issued last week by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation showed.

TBI’s annual crime statistics report showed minor decreases in crime in Scott County and in each of the jurisdictions of the Oneida and Winfield municipal police departments in 2007.

There were 1,540 offenses reported in Scott County in 2007, the TBI reported, of which 516, or 33.5%, were cleared. Those figures are down slightly from 2006, when 1,555 offenses were reported and 536, or 34.5%, were cleared.

The most common crime in Scott County in Scott County in 2007 was theft, with 365 offenses reported. Another 149 burglary cases were reported. Second was vandalism, with 197 offenses reported. Intimidation followed closely behind with 195 offenses reported. There were 159 assault and 123 aggravated assault offenses reported. In total, 160 drug-related offenses were reported.

In the Town of Oneida, meanwhile, there were 509 offenses reported in 2007, down from 548 in 2006. Of those, 255, or 50.1%, were cleared.

A total of 315 arrests were made in Oneida in 2007, 293 of which were adult arrests and 22 were juvenile arrests.

The most common crime reported in Oneida was also theft, with 152 offenses reported. Another 48 cases of burglary were reported. There were 64 vandalism offenses reported and 58 intimidation offenses reported. In total, there were 39 drug-related offenses reported in Oneida in 2007.

In Winfield, there were 124 offenses reported in 2007, with 49, or 39.5%, cleared. The most common offense reported in Winfield was theft, with 17 cases reported. There were 16 vandalism cases reported in Winfield in 2007, 13 burglary cases and 13 aggravated assault cases. In total, there were 12 drug-related cases in Winfield in 2007.

Statewide, a total of 632,540 offenses were reported in 2007, with 60.3% being property crimes and 27.5% being crimes against persons. Cases were cleared 34.4% of the time.

The crime rate statewide was 10,474.6 per 100,000. In counties surrounding Scott, there were 2,548 offenses reported in Anderson County, 1,829 in Campbell County, 847 in Fentress County, 547 in Morgan County, and 126 in Pickett County.

The most common crime in Tennessee in 2007 was theft, with 171,165 cases reported.

Statistics from the TBI showed that 74.8% of those arrested for crimes in Tennessee last year were males, while 25.2% were females. By race, 62.9% were caucasian, while 36.1% were African-American. No other race made up more than 0.3% of the arrests made.
