Grand jury returns 34 indictments

HUNTSVILLE — The Scott County Grand Jury returned 34 criminal indictments during its March term here Monday, the majority of which remained sealed as of the Independent Herald’s Tuesday afternoon press deadline.

A total of 24 indictments remained sealed Tuesday due to the persons charged not being in arrest. Ten indictments had been unsealed.

Among those indictments:

• Wendy R. Anderson, age 23, and Faye R. Foster, age 31, were named in a five-count indictment that included four counts of forgery and one count of burglary of a motor vehicle, all stemming from an alleged Feb. 8 break-in of an automobile, in which Anderson and Foster allegedly stole checks and forged them at area businesses — including the Oneida Smoke Shop, Wilson’s Service Center, Dollar General Store and Mike’s Gas Station — over the next two days;

• Anderson was also named in a separate indictment that included 12 counts of forgery, all stemming from November 2007 incidents in which Anderson allegedly made 12 savings account withdrawals ranging between $60 and $300 on an account at First Trust & Savings Bank;

• Nathan Junior Goodman, age 20, was indicted for failure to register as a violent sexual offender, after allegedly failing to update his registration status with local law enforcement in January;

• Stephanie Marie Lackey, age 27, was named in a three count indictment for driving on a revoked license, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine and failure to appear, stemming from a Jan. 23 traffic stop in Oneida and failure to appear in Criminal Court in February on the charges that resulted from the traffic stop;

• Dale L. Kennedy, age 41, was named in a four count indictment for DUI (fourth offense), driving on a revoked license, violation of the financial responsibility law and violation of implied consent, stemming from a March 8 traffic stop and arrest by THP Trooper Brian Boshears;

• Dorman F. Ross, Jr., age 41, was named in a four count indictment for reckless driving, driving on a revoked license, evading arrest and failure to appear, all stemming from a Jan. 1 traffic stop and arrest by Winfield Police Officer Rob Reed;

• Brenda C. Smith, age 57, was named in a two count indictment for possession of a Schedule III controlled substance (Hydrocodone) with intent to sell and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone) with intent to sell, stemming from a November 2007 arrest by Winfield Police Department;

• Dennis Allen Studer, age 40, was named in a two count indictment for DUI and driving on a suspended license, stemming from a Jan. 26 traffic stop by THP Trooper Mark Chitwood;

• Jessica R. Bertram, age 19, was named in a two count indictment for aggravated burglary and theft under $500, stemming from a July 2007 incident in which Brtram allegedly stole a video gaming system; and,

• Carlos Doug Webb, age 20, was named in a three count indictment for domestic assault, driving on a suspended license and evading arrest, stemming from a December 2007 incident in which Webb allegedly assaulted his brother and subsequently fled from law enforcement.

Indictments represent criminal charges presented to a grand jury by prosecutors. A true bill is returned when the grand jury determines that sufficient evidence exists to send the matter to trial, and a no true bill is returned when the grand jury determines that such evidence does not exist. An indictment does not represent a conviction, and all persons charged remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
