Accident creates problems, leads to arrest

A single-vehicle traffic accident in west Oneida led to the closure of Coopertown Road for more than two hours Friday morning and resulted in the arrest of a 22-year-old Oneida man.

Marcus Wayne Mansfield, 22, of Oneida, was the sole occupant of a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria that was involved in the 7:20 a.m. accident.

According to reports, Mansfield was east-bound on Coopertown Road when he lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway. The vehicle struck a utility pole on the westbound shoulder, knocking down utility lines, before striking and coming to rest against a fire hydrant just east of Cooper Lake Drive.

In addition to the downed utility lines, the fire hydrant ruptured, keeping crews busy in the area for several hours. Coopertown Road remained closed for much of the rest of the morning, as traffic was rerouted onto Verdun Road and Cooper Lake Drive. The Oneida Water & Wastewater Department was forced to shut off water supply to the west Oneida area while the break was repaired. That, in turn, resulted in the Scott County School System being forced to dismiss classes at Burchfield Elementary School.

Mansfield reportedly suffered back and neck injuries. He was treated at the scene and transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center of Scott County by Scott County EMS.

Following his discharge from the hospital’s emergency room, Mansfield was taken into custody by Oneida Police Department and charged with driving under the influence.

OPD Cpl. Ronnie Phillips investigated, with assistance from Sgt. John Terry and Inv. Paul D. Adkins.

Scott County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Gary Sexton and Deputy Troy Hull also responded to the scene, along with firefighters from Oneida Fire Department.
