Accident claims life of Oneida man

PINE HILL — A single-vehicle accident claimed the life of a 29-year-old Oneida man here early Sunday morning.

Anthony Slaven, 29, was a passenger in a 1996 Chevrolet Geo, which flipped several times on Buffalo Road before coming to rest on its top.

According to reports, the Geo was driven by John S. Godsey, 22, who was injured in the accident. The vehicle was west-bound on Buffalo Road when it left the pavement, struck a stump and overturned several times, coming to rest on its top in a ditch along the north side of the roadway. The accident occurred just east of WBNT Radio’s studios at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

Slaven was reportedly seated in the rear of the vehicle and was ejected through the back window as the accident occurred.

Another passenger, Eddie L. Slaven, 21, was also injured in the accident.

Wet pavement, alcohol, and excessive speed were all cited as possible factors in reports. The accident is being investigated by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Boshears.

Deputies from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department and firefighters from the Pine Hill Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident and remained on the scene throughout the night. A section of the roadway was closed for several hours while THP’s investigation was underway.

The wreckage was cleared at approximately 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
