Three co-valedictorians in Class of '08 at OHS

Three co-valedictorians topped Oneida High School’s ‘top ten’ honors list, announced Monday by Principal Jimmy May.

Amber Rose Hamblin, Jessica Jeffers and Jilliane Sexton share valedictorian honors, while Daniel Duncan was named salutatorian.

“The class of 2008 has been a very good group of students. They have worked very hard in the classroom, while participating in many extracurricular activities and have maintained an exemplary grade point average. We are very proud of our students and their achievements here at Oneida High School.” May said.

• Amber Rose Hamblin is the daughter of James & Anita Craig of Oneida and Dennis Hamblin of the Winona community. She is co-valedictorian with a GPA of 4.1905. In high school, Amber has been a five-year member of “The Pride of the Tribe” marching band, a four-year member of Tritones, a three-year member of Beta Club, a two-year member of student council, a member of the National Honor Society, a one-year member of choir and is vice-president of the prom committee. She attends First Baptist Church of Oneida. In June of 2007, she performed at Carnegie Hall in New York with the New England Symphony. In the fall, Amber will be attending Carson-Newman College in Jeffers City, where she will be majoring in Sociology with an interest in Botany.

• Jessica Jeffers is the daughter of Tina and Greg Jeffers. She is a co-valedictorian and will graduate with a 4.105 GPA. She is a member of the OHS cheerleading squad, National Honor Society and will sing with the OHS choir. She is a member of the New Haven Baptist church, where she is active in the youth group and choir. Jessica spent two weeks in Peru last summer doing mission projects and plans to return for two weeks in July. Jessica plans to attend the University of Tennessee and major in speech pathology.

• Jilliane Sexton is the daughter of Cheryl Sexton and the granddaughter of Erl Sexton. She is co-valedictorian and has a GPA of 4.1905. While in high school, Jilliane is a four-year member of the OHS Lady Indians basketball team, a four-year member of the softball team, a four-year member of the Beta Club, a member of the National Honor Society, a one-year member of the foreign travelers club, a one-year member of the SWAT team, a one-year member of the yearbook staff. Jilliane has also been employed at Preston’s Steakhouse for three years. She plans to attend the University of Tennessee in the fall and major in Business Administration with a focus in accounting.

• Daniel Duncan is the son of Tony and Jeannie Duncan. He is salutatorian with a GPA of 4.1707. During high school, he has been a three-year member of the OHS soccer team, member of the Beta Club, and SWAT club. This year, Daniel became the chairman of the First National Bank Junior Advisory Board and a member of the National Honors Society. He also became of member of the OHS Tri-Tones, and I was also selected to be in the All-East Tennessee Choir, as well as the All-State Choir. In the fall, Daniel plans to attend East Tennessee State University where he will major in pre-medicine.

• Zachary Brumett is the son of Jeff and Lisa Brumett. His GPA is 4.0714. Zach is a 4-year member of the football team, a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society and Best Buddies. He was voted Most Likely to Succeed by the Senior class. Zach is a member of First Baptist Church of Oneida. He plans to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

• Alyssa Buttram is the daughter of Paul and Donna Buttram of Robbins and Laurel and Roger Ward of Winfield. She is a three-year member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, a one-year member of the softball team, a one-year member of SWAT and officer in the Student Government. She attends First Baptist Church of Oneida. Alyssa plans to attend Tennessee Technological University and major in chemistry with an emphasis in health sciences. She has a grade point average of 4.0714.

• Breeanna Denise Jeffers is the daughter of Derek and Karen Jeffers. Bree has a GPA a 4.0714. She was a one-year player and is a 3-year statistician of the Oneida High Indians basketball team. In addition, she has been a 2-year member of Best Buddies, a one-year member of SWAT, a one-year member of the TriTones, and is currently a member of the National Honor Society and Prom Committee. Bree plans to attend Tennessee Tech University and major in Early Childhood Education (Pre-school through Third Grade).

• Hannah Grace Vincent is the daughter of SMSgt. Richard and Faye Vincent of Jacksboro (formerly of the Oneida community). Earning a GPA of 4.0714, she was a member of Scott County Air Force JROTC, served as Color Guard commander, editor of “The Frequent Flyer” newsletter, member of the TriTones high school choral group, staff member of the “Indian Ink” newspaper, and a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. Hannah will be attending Carson-Newman College, majoring in psychology in anticipation of post graduate education in Physical Therapy.

• Thomas Isaiah West is the son of Bobby and the late Angie West. Isaiah has a GPA of 4.0244. In high school, Isaiah has been a three- year member of “The Pride of the Tribe” Marching Band, a four-year member of the choir, one-year member of “The Guys” singing group, a one-year member of student government, and a current member of the prom committee and National Honor Society. In the fall, he will be attending the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he will be majoring in business with an interest in photography.

• Nicholeah Lay is the daughter of Hugh and Jaretta Lay. She is a four-year member of the basketball team, a four-year member of the soccer team, a two-year member of the softball team. She is also a three-year member of the Beta Club, two-year member of SWAT, member of the National Honor Society and an officer in the student government. She attends White Rock Baptist Church. She plans to go to Belmont and major in Biology. She has a GPA of 3.9762.
