Oneida woman killed in KY accident
HODGENVILLE, KY — A 23-year-old Oneida woman was killed in a traffic accident here Thursday afternoon.
According to an accident investigation report released by the Kentucky State Police, Jessica Lisa Mae Jane Smith, age 23, of Oneida, died at the scene of a three-vehicle accident that occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday.
According to the release, a vehicle driven by Larry Q. Sweeting, age 19, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, was eastbound on State Highway 210 when it crossed the center line, sideswiping a westbound vehicle driven by Edward L. Sturgeon, age 47, of Rineyville, Kentucky, before colliding with Smith’s Mitsubishi Gallant, which was also westbound.
According to KSP’s investigation, it was not immediately clear what caused Sweeting’s vehicle to cross into the path of oncoming traffic.
Smith died at the scene of the accident, which occurred in Larue County. Sweeting was airlifted to the University of Louisville Medical Center. Sturgeon escaped the accident without injury.
According to the KSP’s report, Smith was wearing a safety belt when the crash occurred. Reportedly, she had been visiting family in nearby Elizabethtown.
Smith, who was employed by the Huddle House of Oneida, is survived by her mother, Lola Overton, of Elizabethtown, father, Kirk Shoopman and wife Sharon, of Oneida, and fiance, Ashley Kidd, of Oneida, as well as a sister and three brothers.
