Lottery Set For Feb. 10 Kickoff

Less than eight weeks before the first lottery tickets will be sold in Tennessee, there is still no word from the state lottery officer regarding what businesses in the local area will serve as lottery retailers.

The Independent Herald was awaiting word at press time as to how many Scott County businesses had been approved to sell lottery tickets. Tennessee Lottery spokeswoman Kim Gerlock said Tuesday that more than 2,000 retailers across the state had been approved to sell the tickets, but could not say how many of those businesses were located locally.

The first ticket is scheduled to be sold on February 10. The state hopes to raise $88 million by July 1, 2004, and plans to fund scholarships for 65,000 students attending Tennessee colleges and universities in fall 2004.

Ticket costs and game details have not yet been determined.

Gerlock said that businesses interesting in applying to sell lottery tickets should submit their applications as soon as possible. Application packets can be downloaded online at www.tnlottery.gov. To receive a packet by mail, call 615-253-6881.
