Funeral services for Scott County News Editor Richard J. Magyar, Jr., were to have been held Wednesday night at the First Baptist Church in Oneida.
Magyar lost a three-month battle with cancer when he died early Monday morning at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was 59.
The son of Richard Magyar, Sr., of Harriman and the late Phyllis Magyar, he was a native of Roane County, and was employed by the Roane County News in Kingston prior to accepting a position with the Scott County News in Oneida in 1976. He was named as the newspaper's editor in 1984, when Audney Lloyd stepped down due to health reasons.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one brother, Gary Magyar, of Nashville; a niece, Melanie; and special friend David Terry and family of Oneida.
Funeral services were to have been held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Oneida with the Rev. Doug White and Kyle Keeton officiating. Music was to have been provided by Randy Terry and the church choir, and special eulogy speakers were to have included Lonnie Ellis, Paul Strunk, Paul Phillips, Rick Harper and Sylvia Billingsley. Entombment will follow in the Carson Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers were to have been Gary Hollis, Brian Langley, Derek Keeton, Bill Hall, Jimmy May, Don Billingsley, Mike Swain and Denny Smith. Honorary pallbearers were identified as Larry West, David Keeton, Gary Sexton, Gene Lewallen, Michael R. Jeffers, Brenda Jeffers, Paul Roy and Dan Scott.
Jones & Son Funeral Home of Oneida had charge of arrangements.
