Huntsville Removes City Administrator Position

December 09, 2004

HUNTSVILLE - By unanimous decision, the board of mayor and aldermen here approved the final reading of an ordinance that officially eliminates the town's city administrator position.

The vote, which followed a public hearing regarding the matter, came at a special called session of the board of mayor and aldermen on Thursday. the first reading of the ordinance was passed on November 22.

The position had been created earlier this year by the previous board of aldermen, none of whom were re-elected in the November 2 municipal election. The board's reasoning for the position was to reign in the authorities of Mayor George Potter. The vote came in the midst of an on-going conflict between Potter and the aldermen.

With the elimination of the position, Dean King, who was appointed to the position of the board, will go back to his previous duties as the town's full-time fire chief. During his tenure as city administrator, he fulfille the duties of both positions with no additional salary. Additionally, all of the powers and authorities normally reserved for the mayor's position will be restored.

Also at Thursday's meeting, the board elected to give a $100 Christmas bonus to each of the town's full-time and part-time employees.
