Clerk Position Temporarily Held By Marcum

December 09, 2004

HUNTSVILLE - The position of Scott County Circuit Court Clerk will be temporarily filled by Deputy Clerk Sharon Marcum, the Independent Herald has learned.

Marcum, a sister of Jan Burress, was previously employed in the local District Attorney's office. County Mayor Dwight Murphy said Monday afternoon that Marcum will fill the position until County Commission is able to appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of the term, which ends in August 2006.

That appointment, Murphy said, will conclude a process which begins with Scott County Clerk Pat Phillips declaring a vacancy and formally notifying the commission, at which point state law requires the commission to issue a public notice. That process will take at least one week. After the notice is issued, the commission can, in regular, adjourned or special session, vote to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term.
