Funeral Services Held For Circuit Court Clerk

HELENWOOD - Funeral services were held at Paint Rock Baptist Church Sunday for Scott County Circuit Court Clerk Jan Burress, who died early Thursday morning at her home following a battle with cancer. She was 62.
Burress had held the position of Circuit Court Clerk for 10 years, having been elected to the position in the August 7, 1994 general election. She was re-elected in 1998 and again in 2002.
District Attorney General William Paul Phillips said that Burress will be missed at her position.
"Jan was a real pleasure to work with," he said. "Everyone in the court house will miss her tremendously."
In her honor, the Scott County Office Building, Scott County Courthouse and Scott County Finance Department all closed at noon on Friday. Scott High School's basketball game at Lenoir City on Friday night was postponed.
Burress is survived by her parents, Sam Hall and Marine Hall; daughters Debbie Bates Phillips and husband Tony of Huntsville and Tracey Smith and husband Ken of Knoxville; sons Randy Bates of Huntsville and Jason Burress of Huntsville; brother Rick Hall and wife Denita of Johnson City and Bill Hall and wife Sue of Oneida; sisters Sheila Buttram and husband Denzil of Paint Rock, Sharon Marcum and husband James Roy of of Pine Creek and Teresa Sexton and husband Tony of Paint Rock.
Funeral services were held on Sunday with Bro. Dean Barnes and Bro. Randy Bates officiating.
