Several injured in rash of weekend accidents
December 8, 2005
A series of traffic accidents over the weekend resulted in injuries of varying degrees to several persons, some of whom were treated at the Scott County Hospital and some of whom were transported out-of-the-county for treatment.
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, a two-vehicle accident occurred on Brewster Mountain just outside the Oneida city limits, resulting in injuries to both drivers.
A second accident occurred at shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon, resulting in injuries to two people when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Alberta Street and Third Street.
Finally, a single-vehicle accident occurred on Baker Highway just inside the Huntsville city limits early Sunday morning, resulting in injuries to the driver of a pickup.
None of the persons injured in the accidents suffered life-threatening injuries.
The Brewster Mountain accident occurred at 12:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon when a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse, traveling west on Litton Road, collided with a 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup that was traveling east on Litton Road.
Mallory Hamilton, 16, driver of the Eclipse, and Delynn Hughett, 42, driver of the pickup, were both injured in the accident. Both were transported to Scott County Hospital and later to Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.
Trooper William Bruce of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, who investigated, said rain-slick pavement was a contributing factor to the accident.
In the Sunday morning accident in Huntsville, a single person — Paul Lowe, Jr., 18, driver and sole occupant of a 1992 Ford pickup — was injured when his vehicle overturned.
According to Trooper Bruce’s accident report, Lowe was traveling eastbound on Baker Highway when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centerline and struck an embankment, causing it to overturn several times. Lowe was taken to the Scott County Hospital where he was treated in the emergency room and then transported on to UT Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening chest injuries.
Bruce was assisted in his investigation of the Baker Highway accident by Trooper Brian Boshears.
