Grand Jury indicts two on child rape charges

HUNTSVILLE — The Scott County Grand Jury returned 37 indictments during its November session last week.

Of the 37 indictments, which were returned after the Grand Jury convened on Monday, Nov. 9, 20 were unsealed. Some 17 indictments remained sealed due to the accused not yet being arrested.

Among the 20 unsealed indictments were a variety of charges, ranging from the most serious of rape of a child to various drug charges.

Among those indicted were:

• Nathan Junior Goodman, age 19, was named in a four-count indictment, including three counts of rape of a child and one count of aggravated sexual battery. The charges stem from alleged incidents between the months of March and August, involving a female child of less than 13 years of age;

• Jariot Wade Chambers, age 20, was indicted on one count of rape of a child, stemming from a July 5 incident in which Chambers allegedly raped a female child of less than 13 years of age;

• Joseph Randall McCann, age 23, was named in a four-count indictment that included two counts of attempt to sell a Schedule II controlled substance and two counts of sale of a counterfeit controlled substance. The charges stem from an April 14 incident in which McCann allegedly attempted to sell Morphine and a substance resembling Morphine;

• Herman Troy Webb, age 36, was indicted on one count of sale of a Schedule II controlled substance, stemming from an April 16 incident in which Webb allegedly sold Morphine;

• Charles R. Sexton, age 59, was named in a three-count indictment that included one count each of manufacturing marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of a weapon, stemming from a June 9 incident in which Sexton was allegedly found cultivating 18 marijuana plants;

• Glen Pete Boyatt, age 52, was named in a three-count indictment that included one count each of DUI (8th offense), violation of vehicle lighting regulations and violation of the implied consent law, all stemming from a July 14 incident in which Boyatt allegedly was found to be operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant or drug;

• Timothy K. Lawson, age 43, was named in a four-count indictment that included one count each of DUI (5th offense), violation of the HMVO bar, open container and violation of the implied consent law, all stemming from a September 25 incident in which Lawson was allegedly found to be operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant or drug;

• Jody D. Duncan, age 27, was named in a two-count indictment, including one count of DUI (4th offense) and one count of open container, stemming from a July 2 incident in which Duncan was allegedly found to be operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant or drug and while possessing an open container of alcoholic beverage;

• Jamie Lewis Stephens, age 31, was named in a three-count indictment that included one count each of DUI (3rd offense), driving on a revoked license and open container, all stemming from an August 5 incident in which Stephens was allegedly found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant or drug and while possessing an open container of alcoholic beverage;

• Bobby William Stephens, age 26, was named in a seven-count indictment that included one count each of DUI (2nd offense), driving on a revoked license, reckless endangerment, possession of a Schedule III controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of the financial responsibility law and violation of the implied consent law, all stemming from an August 4 incident in which Stephens was allegedly found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant or drug, and while possession Hydrocodone;

• Geather D. Lawson, age 51, was named in a four-count indictment that included two counts of DUI (3rd offense), one count of possession of a weapon with the intent to go armed, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident, all stemming from a September 14 incident in which Lawson was allegedly found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant or drug, and while possessing a knife with a blad length exceeding four inches;

• Lelia Rae Laxton, age 32, was named in a three-count indictment that included two counts of DUI and one count of violation of the financial responsibility law, all stemming from a May 1 incident in which Laxton was allegedly found to be operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant;

• Joseph Michael Brooks, age 32, was named in a six-count indictment that included one count each of burglary, theft over $1,000, vandalism over $500, possession of burglary tools, evading arrest and possession of a Schedule III controlled substance for resale, all stemming from a July 16 incident in which Brooks allegedly stole Hydrocodone with a value in excess of $1,000 from Plateau Drug Center and attempted to flee from Oneida Police Officer Jason Pike;

• Jonathan M. Lawson, age 25, was named in a two-count indictment that included one count of aggravated burglary and one count of theft of theft over $1,000, stemming from a September 18 incident in which Lawson allegedly stole a television, video game system, jewelry and other items from an individual;

• Lonnie Gene Byrd, age 34, was named in a two-count indictment that included one count of aggravated burglary and one count of theft over $1,000, stemming from an August 16 incident in which Byrd allegedly stole DVDs valued at more than $1,000 from an individual;

• Bradley Allen Creech, age 25, was named in a two-count indictment that included one count of burglary and one count of theft over $10,000, stemming from an August incident in which Creech allegedly stole aluminum rales and braces valued at more than $10,000 from Scenic Raceway;

• Bryan W. Mansfield, age 22, was indicted on one count of theft over $1,000, stemming from a July 2 incident in which Mansfield allegedly stole a Baja four-wheeler valued at more than $1,000 from an individual;

• Crystal Byrd, age 49, was named in a two-count indictment that included one count of theft over $500 and one count of theft over $1,000, stemming from a November 3, 2005, incident in which Byrd allegedly stole a 1985 Chevrolet Blazer, valued at more than $500, and a 1974 GMC truck, valued at more than $1,000, from an individual;

• Roger Darrell Bowling, age 48, was named in a three-count indictment that included two counts of burlgary of a vehicle and one count of theft over $1,000, all stemming from an August 25 incident in which Bowling allegedly entered a 1995 Nissan truck and a 40-foot freight trailer and stole a CD player, tools and automotive accessories valued at more than $1,000 from an individual; and,

• Gloria May Lackey, age 45, was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault, stemming from a June 3 incident in which she allegedly assaulted two individuals with a motor vehicle.

An indictment is a criminal charge against an individual or individuals presented to the Grand Jury by a prosecuting attorney. The Grand Jury returns a True Bill when it finds sufficient evidence exists to send the matter to trial, and a No True Bill when it finds insufficient evidence to send the matter to trial.

True Bills are merely accusations and all persons charged remain innocent until proven guilty.
