Waste Collection Set For Saturday

HUNTSVILLE - The Scott County Solid Waste Department will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection here on Saturday at the Scott County Recycling Center on Scott High Drive. Hours will be from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

What is household hazardous waste? It is anything generated in the household that has hazardous property. A material is hazardous if it is flammable, corrosive, toxic, or reactive with heat or contact with other materials, according to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Examples of these materials include paints, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, automotive fluids, all types of batteries, and aerosols. Materials that will not be accepted at the collection event are medical wastes, explosives or ordnance, radioactive materials as well as wastes generated by commercial enterprises or a commercial firm.

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is free to all households in Tennessee. It is funded by the Tennessee Solid Waste Management Fund. Only households may participate in this program.

This is a good opportunity for citizens to dispose of household hazardous waste in a safe way. Start preparing for the event by looking around in your closets, basements, garage, cabinets and outbuildings to see what you can dispose of at the event. You can also bring household hazardous waste for your friends and relatives who cannot attend this event.

To manage household waste properly year round, hoseholds can do a number of things. One is to buy only a qauntity of a porduct needed or share any leftovers with a friend. Another is to buy products with less hazardous constituents. Finally, store any remaining household waste in a safe location until Scott County's Hazardous Waste Collection Event.

This event is sponsored by Scott County Mayor Dwight Murphy, the Board of County Commissioners, Scott County Solid Waste Department, and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. For more information about the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, call 663-9770.
