State Announces $1.5M In CDBG Grants
October 20, 2005
NASHVILLE — Governor Phil Bredesen announced last week $1.5 million in local Community Block Development Grants.
The CDBG grants are a series of three $500,000 grants — one each for the Town of Oneida, the Town of Winfield and Scott County.
Scott County’s grant will be used as part of a $537,634 project to construct a sewer line extension that will serve 66 households in the Mt. View community. The project will include $37,634 in local funds.
Oneida’s grant will be part of a $568,450 project that includes $68,450 in local funds and will be used for sewer system rehabilitation that will benefit 1,03 households in the town.
Winfield’s grant is part of a $537,700 project that will construct sewer lines to serve 30 households located on New Light Road and Kingtown Road.
“The CDBG grants provide the funding needed to maintain and update community resources and improve the overall economic and environmental health of Tennessee,” Bredesen said. “I am glad our state can provide funding to communities like Scott County to help spur economic growth.”
The grants were approved following application by each of the local governments and have the support of Sen. Tommy Kilby and Rep. Les Winningham. Sen. Bill Frist, Sen. Lamar Alexander and Congressman Lincoln Davis also aided in securing the funds.
“Our community will see tremendous benefit from this grant,” Kilby said. “Our community’s leaders deserve credit for the hard work they did to secure these funds.”
“The CDBG program is an excellent example of good government at work,” Winningham added. “Low and moderate income persons will especially benefit from this public-private partnership to build sustainable communities.”
Allocation of CDBG funds is based on priorities set at local levels where community needs are best known. They are administered by the Department of Economic and Community Development.
