FAIRVIEW — A Helenwood man was fatally injured in a two-vehicle, head-on collision near the Buffalo Creek Bridge on Baker Highway here Friday morning.
Virgil Lloyd, age 79, of Helenwood, died instantly after his westbound 2003 Grand Marquis crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with an eastbound 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck in the 9:45 a.m. accident.
According to an accident report filed by Trooper Brian Boshears of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the driver of the truck was John Hartzell, age 64, of Robbins. His wife, Ellie Hartzell, was a passenger in the vehicle. Both were seriously injured. They were transported by Scott County EMS to the football field at Fairview School, from where they were airlifted by Lifestar helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
The accident left both lanes of Baker Highway closed for some time, backing up traffic in both directions.
Sgt. Ron McDonald and Trooper Rick Woodward of THP assisted Trooper Boshears at the scene. Several units from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, as well as units from the Scott County Rescue Squad and the East 63 Volunteer Fire Department, also responded to the scene.
Mr. Lloyd was survived by his wife, Flora Blakley Lloyd, and five sons: Tom Lloyd and wife Loretta of Helenwood, Jimmy Lloyd and wife Elaine of Oneida, Marshall Lloyd and wife Jetti of Huntsville, Joey Lloyd and wife Jane of Oneida, and David Lloyd and wife Chrissy of Helenwood. Funeral services were to have been conducted yesterday (Wednesday) at the New River Missionary Baptist Church at 2 p.m.
