One injured in unusual Monday accident
October 12, 2006
An unusual accident on Slaven Lane Monday afternoon busied emergency personnel from Scott County EMS and Scott County Rescue Squad for some time as they worked to free a Huntsville woman from the wreckage of the sole vehicle involved in the accident.
Ilda King, age unknown, of Huntsville, was injured in the accident, which apparently occurred when a 1980s-model Ford pick-up truck owned by King & Daughter garbage pick-up rolled down a steep incline and crashed into the side of a house.
Preliminary reports from the scene of the 873 Slaven Lane accident indicated that the driver of the truck had exited the vehicle at a stop to pick up garbage when the vehicle slipped out-of-gear and began rolling down an incline of approximately 30 degrees.
The vehicle traveled approximately 400 feet and narrowly missed a stand of several trees before crashing into the side of a house at the bottom of the hill. King had apparently attempted to stop the truck as it gathered speed but was not successful.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. Monday afternoon. Units from the Oneida Police Department were first on the scene, followed closely by units from Scott County EMS and the Oneida Fire Department. After it was determined that King was pinned in the wreckage, Scott County Rescue Squad was also dispatched to the scene.
After a rollback tow truck from South Fork Towing was used to pull the vehicle away from the residence, emergency workers were able to remove King from the vehicle. In all, Rescue Squad personnel worked for 30 minutes to extricate King from the wreckage. She was transported by Scott County EMS to Scott County Hospital Emergency Room.
Monday’s accident was the second time in less than a week that the Rescue Squad’s assistance was necessary to free victims involved in accidents. On Tuesday (Oct. 3), a 90-minute effort was needed to free two victims involved in a three-vehicle crash on Alberta Street in downtown Oneida.
Responding to the scene from OPD were Cpl. Ronnie Phillips, Officer Paul D. Atkins and Officer Shonda Duncan. After OPD was dispatched, it was determined that the area of Slaven Road where the accident occurred was located outside the Oneida city limits.
Responding to the scene for the Scott County Sheriff’s Department were Deputy Blake Murphy and Deputy Glenn Gillaim.
The accident was investigated by Trooper Brian Boshears of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
