Motorists Reminded To Yield To Buses
September 30, 2004
HUNTSVILLE - Scott County Schools Transportation Supervisor Dwayne Hughett is reminding motorists to stop for school buses, and warning that they may be ticketed if they do not.
"We've got a big problem with people realizing they have to stop for buses on the four-lane highways in the county," Hughett said.
Hughett said motorists need to be reminded that vehicles are required to stop in both directions for school buses on any undivided highways, including four-lane highways such as U.S. Hwy. 27 and Baker Highway. The fact that a highway has a turn lane doesn't make it a divided highway, he said.
Hughett said the problem is a "big one" within the county, adding that a student was nearly struck
by a vehicle in Winfield last week.
"Troopers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol are riding the buses and watching for motorists who aren't stopping," he said. "If they see someone who isn't stopping, they're radio'ing ahead to have the car stopped."
Trooper Brian Boshears is among those troopers who are riding along on the county's school buses and said that the THP "will stop people and write tickets," if they do not stop for buses.
