Contrary to the beliefs of some, the Scott County Senior Citizens Center remains open and is “going strong,” according to Director Kathy Rose.
County, city and state officials gathered with more than 200 of Scott County’s senior citizens at the center on Thursday afternoon for the county’s first annual Senior Celebration, an event aimed at honoring Scott County’s senior citizens while introducing them to the center’s board of directors and informing the public that the center is, in fact, still open.
Rose, who was appointed director of the center in July, said that an estimated crowd of 250 took part in the Senior Celebration, which featured hamburgers grilled by Scott County Mayor Dwight Murphy and Oneida Mayor Jack E. Lay, and a visit from State Representative Tommy Kilby.
The belief that the center had closed stemmed from the departure of Community Health Systems (CHS), former operator of the Scott County Hospital, earlier this year. CHS had managed the Senior Citizens Center during their tenure with the hospital.
But the center never actually closed, Rose said, and is now operated jointly by Scott County and the Town of Oneida, and “has new programs going on all the time.”
“We cook meals three days each week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday),” she said, “and anyone is welcome to come. We have two day trips per month for our seniors to go on, we play bingo, have a bridge club and excercising classes . . . we’re open and going strong.”
Rose welcomed seniors to stop by the center to pick up a monthly activities calendar and meals menu.
The Scott County Senior Citizens Center is located on Main Street in Oneida.
