Oneida OK's initial vote to de-annex property

September 28, 2006

Oneida’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen Thursday night voted to de-annex several acres of property adjacent to Meadowcreeek subdivision off Coopertown Rd. in West Oneida.

The measure, styled as Ordinance #773, removes property from the town’s most recent annexation ordinance, was requested by property owner Gary Brewster.

Mayor Jack E. Lay stated that the town had never intended to annex Brewster’s property to begin with, but that it was inadvertently included in the annexation.

The ordinance was approved on first reading by a unanimous vote of the board. A public hearing and second and final reading will be held before final approval.

In other town business Thursday, the board heard a report from Vice Mayor Jeff Tibbals concerning the proposed razing of the former Troxel Motors Building located across U.S. 27 from the Scott County News.

Tibbals told the board that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has agreed to fund the removal of toxic materials once used to manufacture fiberglass, after which a crew from the town will level the building and haul off the debris.

The project will come at no cost to the current property owner, Tibbals stated. The hazardous material process is expected to begin in mid-October, take two weeks to complete, after which the property owner will have up to 45 days in which to remove any fixtures or furnishings, Tibbals added.

He further estimated that the town’s demolition crew could begin razing the structure as early as the first of December.

Also in Thursday’s meeting, the board:

• Voted to approve a request for a fund-raising roadblock on October 7 (with an October 14 rain date if needed), for the Scott County Women’s Shelter, after hearing a request from the shelter’s Director Patti Brown. The roadblock will be held at the Oak Grove traffic light on Alberta Street (U.S. 27);

• Heard an activities report from Oneida Fire Department member Chris Collins, standing in for Fire Chief Mike Stringer, for the month of August. Collins said that the department had conducted five training and/or maintenance meetings in August, as well as responded to a total of eight calls;

• Informally discussed how a recently annexed 33 acres adjacent to Oneida City Park will be used, after first being informed that the land will have to be annexed into the town. Vice Mayor Tibbals suggested the possibility of creating a disc course; and,

• Heard a report from Mayor Lay that major work on the City Park Pool would be postponed until 2007, at which time the town will be able to apply for grant funds for the project. Minor repairs will be made in order to have the pool open for next year’s swimming season, the mayor added.
