Mayfield Brown To Resign

Calling it Òone of the most difficult tasks of my career and life,Ó Mayfield Brown has announced his decision to resign his post as Oneida Special School District Director Of Schools.

Brown, who has served as director of schools for 13 years, announced his decision in the form of a written release at Tuesday eveningÕs meeting of the Oneida Special School District Board of Education. The release stated that he will step down on December 31, 2003.

ÒAfter 38 years in the field of education, where I have loved every moment, I feel it is time for the next generation of educators to step up and carry the system to new heights of success,Ó Brown said in the statement.

ÒI believe the support that has been with the school in the past will remain in place, and I hope in the future that support will increase. We have a great group of school employees who have given their hearts and soul to helping meet the standards that represent the Oneida Special Schools. I do not know of a single person working that does not love the children they work with and work more hours than they are paid for. This along with pride creates a culture that is very conducive to a great school.Ó

Board Chairman Mike Baker, who said he was ÒflooredÓ when informed of the decision, credited Brown with recent success of the school system.

ÒWhenever IÕve been asked, IÕve always given him (Brown) credit for the success of the Oneida schools,Ó Baker said. ÒI was here on the board when things were going down the tubes instead of going up.Ó He went on to say that the turnaround occurred when Brown was named Director of Schools.

Brown signed a three-year contract extension with the Oneida Special School District earlier this year but has since decided to take a position with the B.R. Thompson Charitable Trust.

Ò(The trust) has long been a supporter of the Oneida Schools,Ó Brown said in his statement. ÒI believe they will continue their support to all the children of Scott Counties and the other counties it was created to serve. They have a lot of work ahead of them in the future and I am honored to be a part of it.Ó

Brown said he plans to continue to reside in Scott County.

ÒI have many friends all over Scott County that have been a support group for my wife Teressa and I, and I hope they will continue to do so,Ó the statement read. ÒOur home for 13 years has been in Scott County and we plan on spending the remainder of our lives here. We dearly love the people, the mountains and the culture. Nowhere else could we have been treated any better.Ó

Aside from BrownÕs announcement, the board conducted several matters of business at TuesdayÕs regular session meeting, including a consideration of board reorganization. Acting on a motion by board member Steve Thompson, the board elected to leave the current organization as is, with Mike Baker chairman, Denny Smith vice-chairman, Thompson secretary-treasurer and Steve Phillips vice secretary-treasurer.

In other business . . .

By unanimous decision, the board voted to table a postpone consideration of a request from H&C Electric for payment for work done at Oneida Elementary School. The Cleveland-based contractor was awarded a bid in May to conduct relighting of the school, which was aimed at making the school more economically efficient. Wilson Pritchett, the engineer overseeing the project, informed the board on Tuesday that H&C had not completed the work, nor had the company corrected a list of deficiencies. In the motion, made by Thompson, it was stated that an executive decision can be made to make payment to H&C once the work is completed and approved.

The second reading of board policies concerning parental engagement and school admissions was approved by the board.

A Safe Schools Grant Application for 2003-04 and a Boys & Girls Club agreement for 2003-04 were approved by the board.

Several fund-raiser requests were approved, including requests from the soccer team, OHS scholarÕs bowl, middle school football team and OHS cheerleaders.

In the superintendentÕs report, Brown announced the appointment of Joel Robbins as a Special Education teacherÕs assistant at the elementary school. He also announced that several substitute applications have been approved, including applications from Rosemary Armstrong, Anita Barrett, Donetta Boshears, Jennifer Butler, Shonda Jeffers, John Patterson, Amanda Roper, Monica Sexton, Michael Webb and Krista Woods.
