Oneida Mayor To Run Unopposed

HUNTSVILLE Ñ Oneida Mayor Jack E. Lay will run unopposed for reelection on the November 1, Town of Oneida election ballot, but the four incumbent aldermen face opposition, according to the list of candidate qualifying petitions certified here Thursday.

The Scott County Election Commission met at the Scott County Office Building here Thursday afternoon to formally certify the qualifying petitions, but will wait until after todayÕs (ThursdayÕs) candidate withdrawal deadline before actually certifying the Nov. 5 ballot, according to Administrator of Elections Brenda Sexton.

Candidates who do not want their names to appear on the ballot have until noon today to submit a request (in writing) to have their names removed.

Candidates who have been certified for the four aldermenÕs seats in the upcoming election are incumbents James E. Smith, James M. ÒJimÓ Swann, Mack Burchfield and Jeff Tibbals, along with challengers Cecil Anderson, Mary King, David Lowe, Jr., Sharon Miller and Charles ÒWompieÓ Sexton.

Following todayÕs candidate withdrawal deadline, ballots will be ordered, Sexton said.

Prospective voters have until Thursday, October 2, to register to vote in OneidaÕs election. Early voting, originally scheduled to begin on Monday, October 13, will start a day later due to the Columbus Day holiday, Sexton said.

Another change, Sexton said, will effect voters who reside within the city limits of Oneida but outside the sixth district boundary. In the November 1 election, they will cast their ballots at the Oneida Municipal Building, rather than at their regular voting precinct.
