Scott Chosen For Research Project

Scott CountyÕs unemployment picture worsened from June to July, increasing 1.4 percentage points to 12%, according to figures release last week by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Scott is one of 20 counties across the state with double digit unemployment, despite the fact that the stateÕs jobless rate saw overall improvement over the month.

The 12% rate is based on an estimated local workforce of 8,920, with 7,850 of that number being employed during the month and 1,070 out of work.

In counties surrounding Scott, Morgan CountyÕs rate jumped two-tenths of a percentage point to 9.2%; Pickett County experienced a five-tenths of a percentage point hike to 5.4%; Fentress CountyÕs rate jumped nine-tenths of a percentage point to 11.2%; Campbell CountyÕs rate declined three-tenths of a percentage point to 5.6%; and Anderson County experience a five-tenths of a percentage point decrease to 3.9%.

Clay County, at 18.6%, up from 13.1%, had the stateÕs highest jobless rate in July, while Williamson County at 2.6%, down from 3.0% over the month, registered the stateÕs lowest county unemployment rate.

Knox County, at 2.9%, down from 3.1% in June, registered the lowest metropolitan county rate. Hamilton County registered 3.8%, down from 4.1%. Davidson County was at 3.8% as well, down from 4.3%, while Shelby County registered 5.8%, down from 6.4% over the month.

Across the state, 49 county rates decreased, 43 counties increased, and three county rates remained the same.

Statewide, the jobless rate was 5.0%, down from 5.3% over the month., and well below the July national rate of 6.2%, according to Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development James Neeley. ÒTennessee experienced growth in wholesale and retail trade jobs from June to July. There also continues to be growth in health care and social assistance jobs in the monthly figures,Ó said Commissioner Neeley. ÒWe continue to see job losses in durable goods manufacturing.Ó

June-to-July figures show slight employment increases in wholesale/retail trade jobs, up by 2,900. Health care and social assistance jobs increased by 2,100.
