Candidates Line Up For Nov. Election
HUNTSVILLE Ñ Four persons have submitted their qualifying petitions and two others have indicated they will be qualifying for the Town of OneidaÕs November 1 election, according to Brenda Sexton at the Scott County Election Commission Office here.
The qualifying deadline for candidates is at 12-Noon on Thursday, August 21. That same afternoon, during the regular meeting of the Scott County Election Commission, mayoral and aldermen candidatesÕ petitions will be certified.
All five incumbents, including Mayor Jack E. Lay, have picked up qualifying petitions and will apparently seek reelection. The incumbent aldermen are James Smith, Jim Swann, Jeff Tibbals and MacArthur Burchfield. Mayor Lay along with Aldermen Smith and Tibbals have already returned their qualifying papers to the Election Commission Office, Sexton said.
In addition to those four seeking reelection, former alderman Cecil Anderson has turned in a qualifying petition for one of the aldermenÕs seats up for grabs, Sexton said.
The last day to register to vote in the Oneida election will be Thursday, October 2. Early voting for the election has tentatively been set for Monday, October 13, through Monday, October 27 (13 days, excluding Sundays) but Sexton said that could change.
ÒThereÕs a quirk in the law regarding municipal election,Ó she said. ÒIf thereÕs no opposition on the ballot and only incumbents are running, they could request that the early voting period be reduced to five days.Ó
But, with Anderson having already picked up a qualifying petition, thatÕs not likely to be the case in this election.
