Grand Jury Returns 18 Indictments

HUNTSVILLE Ñ The July term of the Scott County Grand Jury has returned 18 indictments, one of which was sealed, and is expected to be called back into session to consider other indictments within the next few weeks, the Independent Herald has learned.

Charges found against those named in the indictments range from driving under the influence to aggravated and statutory rape, with several being indicted on drug-related incidents. The Grand Jury was called into session last Tuesday (July 15) and the indictments were released to the news media on Thursday.

Among those indicted and the charges against them were:

  • William G. Collins, 37, named in a two-count indictment for aggravated rape and aggravated assault in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on May 18.

  • Eddie Massey, 34, named in a four-count indictment for the alleged rape of a female under the age of 18 in the December 2002 to February 2003 period.

  • Thomas L. Phillips, 53, named in a multi-count indictment for manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (two counts), simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony possession of a handgun and violation of the seat belt law, all in connection with his arrest on June 26.

  • Roger Odeva Byrd, 36, named in a three-count indictment for manufacturing methcathinone (a Schedule I controlled substance), felonious possession of drug paraphernalia and simple possession of marijuana, all in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on April 22.

  • Kenneth D. Gibson, 36, indicted on charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and simple possession of a Scheduled II controlled substance, both in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on June 16.

  • Kathryn J. Graham, 26, and Jeffrey Allen Graham, 34, named in a three-count indictment for possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (methamphetamine), simple possession of marijuana and felonious possession of drug paraphernalia, all in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on April 8.

  • Anthony Andre Suttles, 27, named in a two-count indictment for possession of a Schedule I controlled substance (ecstasy) and sale of a Schedule II controlled substance (methamphetamine), both of which allegedly occurred on May 4.

  • Matthew Ivan Muse, 38, indicted on a charge of the sale of a Schedule II controlled substance (Tylox), in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on June 20.

  • Frankie Knight Baker, 36, named in a three-count indictment for DUI (fourth offense), reckless driving and violation of the implied consent law, all of which allegedly occurred on February 1. The indictment notes that previous DUI convictions occurred on March 8, 1990, in Cumberland County; on April 5, 1995, in Scott County; and on June 15, 2000, in McCreary County, Ky.

  • Robert Michael Newport, 27, named in a four-count indictment for reckless driving, reckless endangerment, evading arrest in a motor vehicle and driving on a suspended license, all in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on March 1. Newport was also named in a separate indictment for evading arrest, in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on March 25.

  • Jerry Lee Veach, 31, named in a three-count indictment for theft of items valued at more than $1,000 (two counts), and DUI (second offense), in connection with thefts which allegedly occurred in the April to May period, involving the taking of four wheelers and trailers (owned by Brian Strunk and Rick Stephens) and driving under the influence on May 15. The indictment also showed that Veach had a previous DUI convention in Whitley County, Tenn. on August 2, 2001.

  • Jesse Boyd Posey, 65, indicted on a charge of unlawful sale of alcoholic beverages in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on February 15.

  • Ronnie G. Sexton, 53, named in a three-count indictment for DUI, violation of the implied consent law, and possession of an open container of alcoholic beverage while operating a motor vehicle, all in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on March 21.

  • Wesley Crabtree, 33, indicted for DUI (fourth offense). The indictment revealed that Crabtree had previously been convicted of DUI in Scott County on November 13, 1989, March 27, 1991, and on or about May 5, 2000.

  • Delores A. Musgrove, 51, was indicted for passing a worthless check in excess of $1,000, an incident which allegedly occurred at the Oneida Wal-Mart store on May 19.

  • Philip Hamby, 62, indicted on a charge of DUI in connection with an incident which allegedly occurred on January 17.
