Several Bids Awarded By OSSD

July 8, 2004

The awarding of several bids for services during the 2004-2005 school year topped the Oneida Special School District Board of Education's monthly meeting at Oneida Elementary School Thursday evening.

Among bids awarded by the board of education were bids for automatic sprinkler system testing, awarded to Masco, which submitted the lowest of three bids; fire alarm testing, awarded to Simplex, which submitted the only bid; garbage pickup, awarded to Reliable Waste, which submitted the only bid; and pest control, awarded to Volunteer Pest Control, which submitted the lowest of two bids.

Also awarded Thursday evening were all food services, which will remain with the same providers as during the 2003-2004 school year.

After much discussion, the board elected to table a decision on awarding bids for occupational/physical theraphy service and speech/vision services for the 2004-2005 school year. The board was unable to determine a clear better choice between Synergistics - which provided the services during the 2003-2004 school year - and Hallmark, both of which submitted nearly identical bids.

In another matter of business Thursday, the board accepted a letter of resignation from Dr. Nancy Williamson, a long-time employee of the Oneida Special School District who served as the supervisor of instruction. Dr. Williamson stated in her letter of resignation that she was retiring her position to "pursue other career objectives." She went on to state that the "Oneida schools will always be special to me."

Board Chairman Mike Baker said that he and the board "truly hate to see her go."

The board also accepted letters of resignation from Charlsey Cofer and John Blevins.

In other business Thursday, the board:

* Approved a contract with the Tennessee Technology Center for 2004-2005;
*Adopted the Family Resouce Center Budget for 2004-2005;
* Approved a budget for JAG (Jobs for Tennessee Graduates);
* And, approved fundraiser requests for the Oneida Middle School athletic groups, including a golf scramble, school dances and soft serve ice cream sales.

In the superintendent's report, Director of Schools Henry Baggett told the board that the faculty and staff for the 2004-2005 school year, including teachers, support staff, food service employees, custodial employees and school bus drivers, had been placed for the 2004-2005 school year.

In the principals' reports, Oneida Middle School Principal Cheryl Butler reminded parents who plan to transfer their children to Oneida Middle School from outside the school district to call the school (569-2475) so that enrollment can be completed.

The Oneida Special School District Board of Education meets once monthly, typically the first Thursday of each month. Each meeting begins at 6:45 p.m. and alternates between the Oneida Elementary School library and the Oneida High School library.
