Officers Injured In Tuesday Morning Incident
March 10, 2005
Two Oneida Police Department officers were injured during a scuffle with a criminal suspect at a Sandcut Road residence early Tuesday morning.
According to Police Chief Mike Cross, Officer Jason Pike and Investigator Paul Adkins were dispatched to a domestic violence call at 12:29 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Sandcut Road residence. Upon arrival at the home, the officers were attempting to place Jason C. Lackey, age 24 of Helenwood, under arrest. Lackey resisted arrest and a struggle ensued, Chief Cross said.
Both officers and Lackey fell through a glass door, with all three sustaining injuries. Chief Cross said that Adkins sustained the most serious injuries in the incident.
Cross said that after crashing through the door, both officers were bit by a chow dog that was at the residence, inflicting further injuries.
Officer Pike was treated and released at the Scott County Hospital. Cross said that Investigator Adkins was transferred by private vehicle from Scott County Hospital to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville Tuesday morning, where he underwent surgery on his arm.
Lackey's injuries were described by Cross as "very, very minor."
The dog that bit both officers, meanwhile, had not received required vaccinations and will be placed under observation for 14 days, Cross said, after which its fate will be determined by the court.
Cross said that when the radio call went out that an officer had been injured, two units from the Scott County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene, along with Winfield Police Chief Steve Trammell and other off-duty OPD officers.
Lackey was being held at the Oneida City Jail without bond Tuesday morning. Cross said that he was on probation, which was in the process of being revoked. As of the Independent Herald's press deadline, Lackey was charged with assault under domestic violence law and resisting arrest. But Cross said that further charges are pending. He was due to appear before Scott County Sessions Court Judge James L. (Jamie) Cotton, Jr. yesterday (Wednesday) morning for a preliminary hearing.
