PIONEER — One person was killed and another seriously injured in a pre-dawn crash at the county line here Thursday.
Donnie Ellis, a well-known Oneida man, died in the head-on collision, which occurred on State Hwy. 63 approximately one mile west of the Scott-Campbell county line at 5:40 a.m. Thursday morning.
Ellis, 46, was the driver of a Ford F-250 pickup, which collided head-on with a Coca-Cola tractor-trailer. Ellis was reportedly on his way to work in Anderson County when the accident occurred.
According to a report filed by Sr. Trooper Brian Boshears of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Ellis’s pickup was east-bound on Hwy. 63 when it apparently crossed the center line and collided with the west-bound tractor-trailer.
The driver of the delivery truck, Michael V. Reed, 23, of Oneida, was seriously injured in the accident. He was transported by Scott County EMS to St. Mary’s of Scott County Emergency Room, and later transferred to a Knoxville-area hospital to be treated for injuries that were said to be non-life threatening.
Visibility in the area at the time of the crash was said to be limited due to heavy fog.
The scene of the accident was one of tragedy. The tractor-trailer came to rest several feet west of the point of collision, while the pickup truck was split into two pieces, with the cab of the truck removed from the frame.
In addition to the THP and EMS, also responding to the accident were several units of the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, East 63 Volunteer Fire Department and Scott County Rescue Squad.
Hwy. 63 was closed in both directions for several hours as the accident was investigated and emergency workers cleared the roadway.
Ellis is survived by his wife, Becky Kennedy Ellis, and children D.J. and Amanda, as well as his mother, Kitty and several other family members.
He and his wife were frequent volunteers at Burchfield Elementary School, where their children attend classes.

Donnie Ellis
Donnie was my first cousin, I have very happy memories of summers spent with him and his siblings at my Aunt Kitty's home when we were all kids.
The loss of such a young, loving, caring, and wonderful man is such a great tragedy to all who knew and loved him. His sense of humor and bright smile will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to his wife Becky, son D.J., and daughter Amanda, and also to all of his brothers and sisters, and to his mother Kitty. Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Terribly sad news. Donnie was my first cousin. I haven't seen him in years, but I remember the visits between our families with incredible fondness. I will be praying for the entire family, both immediate and extended.
