HUNTSVILLE — Whitney Phillips hit a game-winning 3-point shot with 13 seconds remaining in the third overtime Thursday, as Scott High upset district-leading Stone Memorial, 86-82.
With their fourth consecutive victory, all of them in district play, the Lady Highlanders handed Stone its first loss of the District 4-AA season.
The loss knocked Stone into a tie with Christian Academy of Knoxville for the district lead, while Scott solidified its third place district standing.
The Lady Highlanders led most of the way in regulation, only to see Stone battle back late to force the extra sessions.
Scott battled from behind three different times in overtime, with Shay Anderson twice knocking down crucial 3-point shots as time waned to keep the Lady Highlanders’ hopes alive.
After regulation ended in a 60-60 tie, Scott managed just one free throw in the first overtime, while Stone’s Leslie Brown scored four points and the Panthers appeared to be on their way to victory.
But Anderson—who finished with 21 points—knocked down a trey to force a second overtime.
Stone again found itself up by three in the second overtime, before Anderson again hit a shot from beyond the arch to send the game into a third overtime.
In one of the most thrilling games Highlander Gymnasium has witnessed in some time, Scott again found itself trailing as the third overtime wound towards its conclusion.
But Phillips, who finished with a game-high 30 points, nailed a 3-point shot over a Stone defender to give the Lady Highlanders an 84-82 lead. After Stone missed a shot at the other end, Phillips hit two free throws to seal the victory for Scott.
Scott has district games remaining at Loudon (tomorrow [Friday]) and against CAK (Tuesday).
