Outdoors: No major changes for Scott hunting seasons

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission last week approved the Volunteer State’s 2010-2011 hunting seasons, with no significant changes that will impact local hunters.

The biggest change affects the special-season deer and turkey hunts. In most counties, quota hunts are being replaced with non-quota hunts, which will eliminate the need for a draw and open the hunt to all.

In Scott County, the fall turkey season—previously limited to 50 hunters—will be a non-quota hunt. The bag limit for the December hunt will be one bird. A Type 94 permit will be required for all participating hunters who do not have a sportsman’s, lifetime sportsman’s or senior citizen’s license.

The hunting season dates and standard bag limits are unchanged, with the exception of six Unit B counties—including Anderson County—which are being moved from the five-day to 14-day antlerless muzzleloader hunt.

Scott County was already among the Unit B counties with antlerless opportunities throughout the muzzleloader season.

A wild hog hunting season with dogs was established for several counties along the Cumberland Plateau, but Scott County was not included. In Cumberland, Fentress, Overton and Pickett counties, wild hog hunting with dogs will be permitted Oct. 2-10, Nov. 1-4, Dec. 2-15 and Dec. 31-Jan. 3.

Another change this year is a requirement that all harvested big game animals be checked in on the calendar day in which they are harvested.

East Tennessee bear hunters will see the hunting season reduced from five weeks to three weeks. The archery hunt in Blount, Carter, Cocke, Greene, Jefferson, Johnson, Monroe, Polk, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties begins on Sept. 25 and continues through Oct. 15.

This fall’s deer seasons will see archery season open on Sept. 25 and continue through Oct. 29, with an antlerless limit of two in Unit B. The young sportsman’s hunt will be held on Oct. 30-31, with a limit of one deer. Muzzleloader season will be open Nov. 6-19, with an antlerless limit of one deer in Scott County. The first gun season is Nov. 20-Dec. 5.
