KNOXVILLE — Oneida’s Dylan West has been selected as a recipient of a scholar-athlete award given annually by the East Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
The award is presented each year to high school scholar-athletes who achieved success both on the field and in the classroom. Award recipients must post outstanding GPAs and be contributors and role models in their respective communities.
A standout safety at Oneida, West wrapped up his high school career by being selected to both the coaches’ and media’s all-state teams. West was a dual threat in the Indians’ secondary, picking off passes and delivering big hits to receivers attempting to haul in passes across the middle of the field.
Academically, West will finish in the Top 10 of his graduating class.
“The most satisfying part of being a high school coach is seeing players succeed in life; being a good football player is secondary to us,” Oneida head coach John Brewster said. “Dylan West is a young man who has been a tremendous asset to our community, school and team. He will be a wonderful husband and father one day.”
A ceremony honoring the National Football Foundation honorees included addresses by Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley, Carson-Newman football coach Ken Sparks, Voice of the Vols Bob Kesling and retired 4-star Army General Carl W. Stiner.
West plans to enroll at the University of Tennessee this fall and walk on to the UT football team.
