HUNTSVILLE — Cody Malicant came up big when Campbell County needed him most.
Limited to just seven points in the first three quarters, Malicant put up 13 in the fourth quarter and scored 10 of his team’s final 14 points on the first night of the Thanksgiving Classic at Scott High School.
Campbell County needed every one of them to stave off an upset-minded Oneida team that played the Cougars close all night and seemed to get better as the game went along.
Senior standouts Cody Carson and Dylan West teamed up for 51 points as the Indians got as close as four points midway through the fourth quarter (71-67) and had an opportunity to claw closer before Malicant made the first of many big fourth quarter plays, earning a trip to the line and completing a three-point play to push the lead to seven points. Oneida would get no closer than six points the rest of the way, as Campbell County pulled away for an 87-74 win.
Never shy about jacking up shots, the Campbell County shot 34 of 77 from the field, while limiting Oneida to 22 of 58. But the Indians took advantage of an aggressive Cougar defense, shooting 23 of 30 from the free throw line to keep themselves in the game.
Oneida’s defense, meanwhile, forced Campbell County into 19 turnovers. With a decided size advantage on the glass, the Cougars out-rebounded the Indians 43 to 33.
The Indians led twice in the first quarter but eventually fell behind by 11 points in the second quarter, and trailed 40-31 at the intermission. Down 54-43 late in the third period, the Indians used an 8-2 run to claw their way back into it as the fourth quarter began. Oneida cut the gap to 71-67 with under four minutes remaining when Tyler Blevins knocked down a 3-point shot. But the Cougars would close the game on a 16-7 run.
