WARTBURG — Standout freshman Alex Fountain scored on a layup with six seconds remaining, as Wartburg forced Oneida into overtime here Tuesday (Jan. 5). But the Indians would survive the extra session to stay in the thick of the District 4-A race, defeating the Bulldogs 67-61.

Oneida took the lead for good, 62-61, on a pair of free throws by Dylan West with less than two minutes remaining, then made the most of free throw opportunities and strong defense the rest of the way to earn the overtime win.

Cody Carson scored 25 and Jake Wright added 22 as the Indians survived Fountain’s 21 points and six 3-point shots by Zach Shannon.

The game started with Wartburg on a tear, going up 16-5 midway through the first quarter.

Oneida would battle back to take the lead in the second quarter, going up 31-24 when Carson hit a 3-point shot to cap a 13-0 run by the Indians.

Wartburg regained the lead in the third quarter with a 15-4 run that put the Bulldogs in front 41-35 with 3:55 remaining. That set the stage for a 12-0 run by Oneida, as the Indians surged back in front, 51-44, midway through the fourth quarter.

An offensive rebound by Clay Jeffers off a missed free throw with 20 seconds remaining set up a Wright layup to give Oneida a 57-55 lead, but Fountain answered with the layup at the other end.

In the extra session, West hit two free throws to put his team up 62-61, followed by a free throw by Noah Duncan. Wartburg had a chance to tie with 23 seconds remaining, but Tyler Blevins blocked a shot attempt and was fouled with 12 seconds left. He made both free throws at the other end to seal the victory.

SCORING: Oneida — Carson 25, Wright 22, West 13, Blevins 4, Duncan 2. Wartburg — Fountain 21, Z. Shannon 20, Goodman 11, J. Shannon 9.
