HUNTSVILLE — The official calls for the August 5, 2010, Tennessee primary and local general election are being issued this week by the Scott County Election Commission.

Gabe Lowe, Administrator of Elections for the Scott County Election Commission, posted the formal notices (in this issue of the Independent Herald), detailing the various offices which will be on the ballots for both the primary and general election, as well as the deadlines for candidates and voter registration.

The Primary Election ballot will feature candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, Governor, State Representative from the 38th House District, and any other office as required by law.

Offices to be filled on the General Election ballot for Scott County will include County Attorney, County Mayor, County Commission (all districts), Sheriff, County Trustee, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Superintendent of Roads, County School Board members (1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th districts), Oneida School District Board of Education (three seats), and any other office as required by law.

The deadline for candidates to file petitions and all certified copies — for both the Primary and General Election — is 12:00 Noon prevailing time on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at the Election Commission Office, located in the Scott County Office Building, 2845 Baker Highway, in Huntsville (Phone: 423-663-3210; Fax: 423-663-3127).

The deadline to register to vote in person in the August 5 election is July 6. That date is also the postmark deadline for those wanting to register to vote by mail.

It was also noted in the public notice that anyone interested in becoming a candidate for the office of Sheriff must have affidavits and supporting documents filed with the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) by March 18, 2010. More information about seeking the Sheriff’s office may be obtained by contacting the local Election Commission Office. The POST Commission certifies to the local Election Commission the names of those candidates who have properly qualified to have their name placed on the ballot.

In addition, prospective candidates for the local office of Superintendent of Roads must file affidavits and all other evidential documents with the Tennessee Highway Officials Certification Board by March 18, 2010. The Certification Board certifies to the local Election Commission the names of all persons who have properly qualified to have their names placed on the ballot. Further information about qualifying for the office of Road Superintendent can be obtained by contacting the Election Commission.

Members of the Scott County Election Commission are: Chairman James R. Potter, Secretary Jerry W. Thompson, W. Claude Terry, Jr., Richard B. Smith and Charles E. Valentine.
