Leslie L. Terry, 82

Leslie Lee Terry, 82, formerly of Oneida, passed away November 25, 2009, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin, Tennessee, surrounded by his wife and family.

Born in Oneida, May 12, 1927, he was preceded in death by his parents, Harrison and Flora Garrett Terry; two infant sons, Arlie Joseph and William Lee Terry; one great-grandson, Elijah Terry; and one brother, Francis Lester Terry.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. The love and kindness he showed his family and all he came in contact with inspired his family and all who knew him. He worked at the Oneida Post Office for more than 30 years, and was a beloved member and deacon of Leatherwood Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, and a southern gentleman who never turned away a person in need. He loved his God, his wife, family, his country, his garden and mowing grass. One of his favorite things was to share items from his garden throughout the community, and it is untelling how many lawns he mowed for friends, churches and cemeteries. Over a period of years, he led a campaign of collecting and selling aluminum cans that greatly contributed to the addition of a steeple and other improvements to Opossum Rock/Leatherwood Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Terry of Gallatin, formerly of Oneida; his children: Brenda Kay Crockett and husband, Doug, Steve Terry, and Carolyn Street and husband, John, all of Gallatin, Tenn., Audrey Phillips of Oneida, and MSgt. Joel Segal Terry and wife, MSgt. Yvonne, of San Antonio, Texas; grandchild whom he helped raise, Travis Phillips and wife, Teresa, and six other grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one brother, Joseph Eugene Terry of Muncie, Ind.; and many other relatives.

Funeral service was to have been conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 2, in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Milford Terry and Pastor Bobby Hill officiating. Music was to have been provided by the Hancock Family. Interment was to have followed at Litton Cemetery.

Jones & Son Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
