Send to friendHUNTSVILLE — Jacob Phillips rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more, as Huntsville defeated Lafollette 36-0 Thursday at Jack E. Diggs Field.
The Bears wrapped up the regular season with a 6-2 record and a North District championionship. The playoffs begin tonight (Thursday).
Phillips, Huntsville’s eighth grade quarterback, rushed for 46 yards on six carries and completed three of four passes for 89 yards, as Huntsville rolled up 330 yards of total offense. Logan Pike gained 91 yards on just four carries before going down with an injury in the first half. Caleb Byrge added 58 yards on four carries.
The Huntsville defense was as impressive as its offense, limiting Lafollette to 83 total yards and forcing four turnovers.
The win would’ve been even more impressive, if not for a pair of Huntsville turnovers deep in Lafollette territory to begin the game.
On Huntsville’s first drive, Pike carried the ball to the Lafollette 5-yard-line, but a fumble on the ensuing play resulted in a turnover. After an interception by Chandler Warmener gave the Bears possession again, Pike had another long run deep into Lafollette territory, but another Huntsville turnover thwarted the scoring opportunity.
Lafollette wasted little time returning the favor, with a fumble at the 22-yard-line. That set up an 18-yard touchdown run by Phillips on the first play of the second quarter, giving Huntsville a 6-0 lead.
Lafollette moved deep into Huntsville territory on the ensuing drive, but an interception at the 7-yard-line ended the scoring threat. From there, a long run by Pike set up a 51-yard touchdown pass from Phillips to Kaleb Byrge, and Huntsville led 13-0 with 2:30 remaining in the first half.
It didn’t take Huntsville long to add to its lead in the third quarter. Phillips found tight end Braxton Daugherty for a 32-yard touchdown and a 22-0 lead.
A 23-yard run by Dalton Coker late in the third quarter set up a 5-yard touchdown by Phillips on the first play of the fourth quarter, as Huntsville expanded the lead to 28-0.
After a 42-yard run by Byrge on the ensuing possession, Phillips scored from a yard out to push the lead to 36-0 with 2:34 remaining.
Lafollette was unable to advance the ball on its final possession, as Coach Mark Proffit’s defense completed the shutout.
