HUNTSVILLE — Some 217 Scott County voters cast their ballots for the 2010 county general election and state primaries Monday, bringing the total number of votes since early voting began July 16 to 2,035.

According to Administrator of Elections Gabe Lowe, another 20 paper ballots—from nursing home residents or absentee voters—were received Monday, bringing the total number of paper ballots to 230, for a grand total of 2,265 votes cast in the early voting period.

Early voting was to have continued Tuesday and Wednesday, and will resume today and tomorrow before ending Saturday. Poll hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today (Thursday), 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

If daily trends hold, early voting numbers should easily top 3,000, but might fall short of the local early voting record set in 2006, when more than 4,000 voters cast their ballots early in a crowded election cycle.

The busiest day of the early voting season was July 16, the first day of open polls, when 371 showed up to cast their ballots. Last Friday, 351 persons cast ballots at the polling locations in Oneida (Municipal Services Building) and Huntsville (Scott County Office Building).

The two races attracting the most attention this year are the county mayor’s race and sheriff’s race.
In the race for county mayor, incumbent Rick Keeton is opposed by Oneida alderman Jeff Tibbals, Oneida businessman Harold Brooks, Oneida minister Ed King and First District resident Speedy Blevins.

The sheriff’s race pits Oneida Chief of Police Mike Cross against Winfield resident Brad Lay, acting sheriff Bobby Ellis, former sheriff Jim Carson, former deputy Brian Keeton and MBR-TV’s Doc Hall.
