Charles L. (Pete) Stephens, 85, of Winfield, passed away October 22, 2009, at St. Mary’s Medical Center of Scott County in Oneida.
Born in Winfield, February 10, 1924, he was preceded in death by his parents, Cal and Erna Walker Stephens; his wife, Ethel Alene Wilson Lay Stephens; one brother, Edward R. Stephens; and two sisters, Carol and an infant sister.
He was an ordained Minister, and was a member of Isham United Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was a rural mail carrier for 50 years.
He is survived by his sons: Morris Stephens and wife, Bonnie, of Winfield, Donald Stephens and wife, Barbara, of Nashville, Sam Stephens and wife, Stella, of Caryville, and Harold Lay of Kingston; daughters: Phyllis Strunk and husband, Delmon, of Winfield, and Rachel Kidd of Knoxville; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, special friend, Beulah Carson; and many other relatives.
Funeral service was conducted October 26, in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Peters officiating. Music was provided by Upper Marsh Creek Church Choir. Interment followed at Stephens Cemetery in the Isham community.
