Board member faces DUI charge

ROBBINS — The suspect of a DUI traffic stop here over the weekend was identified as Bradford A. Zachary, a member of the Scott County Board of Education.

Zachary, who represents the 2nd District on the school board, was arrested by Deputy Kris Lewallen of the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, and charged with driving under the influence, second offense. Court records indicated that Zachary’s first offense stemmed from a 2006 arrest. Records also revealed a November 1999 DUI arrest in Oneida.

An arrest warrant filed by Lewallen alleged that a vehicle — alleged to have been driven by Zachary and containing one other passenger — was observed “overturning” as it attempted to turn from U.S. Hwy. 27 onto Black Creek Road in Robbins.

The warrant alleged that Lewallen activated his blue lights as Zachary was pulling into the driveway of his Sims Road residence.

“The defendant once again overturned the driveway turning and traveling through a yard and then correcting it back onto the driveway,” the warrant stated. “The defendant still refused to stop his vehicle until he made it to the top of his driveway. Upon approaching the vehicle affiant could smell a very loud odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the defendant’s vehicle and from his person. Upon asking the defendant to step out of his vehicle affiant noticed that the defendant was very unsteady on his feet and was speaking with a confused slurred speech.”

The warrant went on to allege that Lewallen conducted a field sobriety task, “upon which [Zachary] could not perform.” It further alleged that Zachary refused to submit to a blood alcohol test or an intoximeter test.
Zachary was elected to the Board of Education last August, filling the seat being vacated by former board chairman Sam Wright.
