TBI investigating after discovery of body at Brimstone

ROBBINS — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating after the discovery of a body in the Brimstone community near here on Wednesday.

Harold Griffith, 73, of Helenwood, was discovered dead inside a shed behind his mother’s home off Brimstone Road. Scott County Sheriff Ronnie Phillips confirmed the discovery of a body, saying that the investigation had been turned over to the TBI. However, Phillips stopped short of calling it a homicide investigation, and said no further information can be released due to the TBI’s investigation.

However, Phillips said authorities aren’t sure how Griffith died. He had been dead for several days before his body was discovered. Phillips said the body was immediately sent for an autopsy, and that authorities hope to know more pending preliminary autopsy results on Thursday.

Griffith did not live with his mother, but frequently checked in on her. When his family had not heard from him for several days, family members began searching for him.

This is a developing story. Additional details will be reported online as they’re  available, and in the July 18 print edition of the Independent Herald.
